Events

Since KLM is a civilian group and doesn't seem to have that much of turfing or CnR activity, KLM organises events. Events are made for fun and fun only! (Unless there is some sort of money bet, then it's personal :P) Most of these are events are to be led by leaders, but can also be led by regular members.

A few of the traditional KLM events are listed below;

1- The ol' Road Trip
To join the road trip, you must be either a KLM member or a non-KLM member with the permission of the host.
    ~Requirements
    >Having 3 or more participants.
    >A specific vehicle may be required or you may be allowed to choose one - this depends on the host.
    >Being a good driver without ramming other people.
    >Being respectful to the participants.
    ~No entry fee

2-Jeopardy And Questions
Made to help new KLM members and to have fun, Usually carried out by a leader or any player willing to start it, it consists of the host asking questions in groupchat, and the first to answer would actually win a prize of the host's choice, usually between 1000$--5000$, sometimes 69$.
    ~Requirements
    >Obviously more than 2 participants.
    >Being a respectful player.
    >Not asking for more and pressuring the host.
    >Not whining.
    ~No entry fee

3-Sandking CDD
Sandking Chillad Drop Duel, it's an event exclusive for KLM, where participants get their Sandkings to the top of Chillad and having to drop/knock other participants off Chillad, killing them (crash kills) or getting their car destroyed before your own also eliminates them out of the game, all cars must be fully repaired and participants fully healed to start the duel.
    ~Requirements
    >Owning a Sandking, at least for the while of the duel.
    >Being respectful.
    >Not whining about loss in any form.
    >Playing fair and within the rules of not having nitrous or hydraulics.
~Entry fee
    >Possible entry fee for a prize
Note; winners (last Sandking standing) takes all the money given to the host from participants as a prize.

4-Paintball FFA & TDM
An alternative to turfing, since some players like to. Consists of Team Death-Match or Free For All. Located at the southern urban area of SF, Paintball Stadium.
    ~Requirements
    >Owning an M4, at least for the while of the event
    >Being respectful.
    >Not whining about loss in any form.
    >Playing fair and within the rules of not having drugs or other advantages.
    >Enjoying the event.
    >Playing within the rules, e.g. if host says "cannot re-enter when dead" you must do so.
    ~No entry fee

5-Plane Trip
Since KLM is based on a pilot group, this event is also quite fun.
    ~Requirements
    >Access to an aircraft chosen by the host
    >Keeping in formation (if set)
    >Sticking to the rules set by the host
    ~No entry fee

6-Race
A race can be a nice competition.
    ~Requirements
    >Using the CIT race script or self-planned
    >Respect other road users and racers
    >Keep within the rules, for example if the host does not allow tuned vehicles then you must use an un-tuned vehicle.
~Entry fee
    >Possible entry fee for a prize

Above text mostly written by the legendary MeDoMaN himself. The greatest event host known in KLM. Statistic approved by Master. He will be missed.

History

How the KLM is formed over the years.

Pre World War II

A 1919 advertisement
KLM was founded on 7 October 1919 by Albert Plesman, making it the oldest carrier in the world still operating under its original name, though the company stopped operating during the Second World War—apart from the operations in the Dutch Antilles in the Caribbean. The first KLM flight was on 17 May 1920, from Croydon Airport, London to Amsterdam carrying two British journalists and a number of newspapers. It was flown by an Aircraft Transport and Travel Airco DH.16, callsign G-EALU, piloted by Jerry Shaw. In 1920 KLM carried 440 passengers and 22 tons of freight. In 1921 KLM started scheduled services.
By 1926 it was offering flights to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Paris, London, Bremen, Copenhagen and Malmö, using primarily Fokker F2 & Fokker F.III.[2]

Intercontinental service to the Netherlands East Indies started in 1929. This was for several years the world's longest scheduled air route. The service used Fokker F.VIIb, although the first non-scheduled KLM flight had been in 1924 by Fokker F7 registration H-NACC piloted by Van der Hoop. In 1930 KLM carried 15,143 passengers. The Douglas DC-2 was introduced on the Batavia service in 1934.

KLM's Douglas DC-2 aircraft Uiver after placing second in the MacRobertson Air Race from RAF Mildenhall, England, to Melbourne in 1934
The first transatlantic KLM test flight was between Amsterdam and Curaçao in December 1934 using the Fokker F-XVIII "Snip." The first of the airline's Douglas DC-3 aircraft were delivered in 1936 and these replaced the DC-2s on the service via Batavia to Sydney. KLM were the first airline to serve Manchester's new Ringway airport from June 1938. KLM was the only civilian airline to operate the Douglas DC-5, using four examples in the Dutch East and West Indies between May 1940 and late 1941.

KLM Douglas DC-3 at Manchester Airport in 1947
When German military forces invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940 a number of KLM aircraft (mostly DC-3's and a few DC-2's) were en route to or from the Far East or operating services in Europe. Five DC-3s and one DC-2 managed to escape to England. During the entire war these KLM planes and KLM crew would fly the infamous Bristol-Lisbon scheduled passenger flights under BOAC registration.
The Douglas DC-3 PH-ALI 'Ibis', then registered as G-AGBB, was attacked three times by the Luftwaffe: on 15 November 1942 and 19 April 1943 and finally on 1 June 1943 (fatal to passengers and crew, see BOAC Flight 777). Some KLM aircraft with their crews ended up in the Australia-Indonesia region, where they aided in transporting people who were escaping the Japanese aggression in that area.
In early 1946 KLM recommenced European flights, initially with a fleet of Douglas DC-3s and Douglas DC-4s. On 21 May 1946 KLM was the first continental European airline to start transatlantic scheduled flights (to New York). Long range pressurised Lockheed Constellations and Douglas DC-6s joined KLMs fleet in the late 1940s; the Convair 240 began European flights in late 1948.

The 1950s
In 1950 KLM carried 356,069 passengers. At the 31st of December 1953 the founder, and president, of KLM, Albert Plesman, died at the age of 64.[3] He headed the company until his death.[4] Fons Aler succeeded Albert Plesman as president of KLM.[5] On 25 July 1957 the airline introduced its flight simulator for the Douglas DC-7C – the last KLM aircraft with piston engines – which opened the trans-polar route from Amsterdam via Anchorage to Tokyo on 1 November 1958. Each crew flying the transpolar route over the Arctic was equipped with a winter survival kit, including a 7.62 mm selective-fire AR-10 carbine for use against polar bears in the event the plane was forced down onto the polar ice.

The 1960s and 1970s
Beginning in September 1959, the airline introduced the four-engined turboprop Lockheed Electra onto some of its European and Middle Eastern routes. In March 1960, KLM introduced the first Douglas DC-8 jet into its fleet. In 1961 the president of KLM, Fons Aler, was succeeded by Ernst van der Beugel. Van der Beugel resigned as president in 1963 due to health reasons. Horatius Albarda was appointed to succeed Ernst van der Beugel as president of KLM in 1963.In 1965 Alberda lost his life in an air crash. Dr. Gerrit van der Wal succeeded Alberda as president of KLM. In 1966, KLM introduced the Douglas DC-9 on European and Middle East routes.

The new terminal buildings at Schiphol Airport opened in April 1967 and in 1968, the stretched Douglas DC-8-63 entered service. With 244 seats it was the largest airliner of the time. KLM was the first airline to put the higher gross-weight Boeing 747–200B into service, starting in February 1971, powered by Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines, thus beginning the airline's era of widebody jets. In 1973, Sergio Orlandini was appointed to succeed Gerrit van der Wal as president of KLM.[11][citation needed]

The 1980s and 1990s
In 1980, KLM carried 9,715,069 passengers. In 1983, it reached agreement with Boeing to convert some of its Boeing 747–200s to stretched upper deck configuration. The work started in 1984 at the Boeing factory in Everett, Washington and finished in 1986. The converted aircraft were called Boeing 747-200SUD, which the airline operated in addition to Boeing 747–300s. Sergio Orlandini retired in 1987, and is succeeded by Jan de Soet as president of KLM.[12] In June 1989, KLM introduced the Boeing 747-400 and acquired 20% of Northwest Airlines in July, starting an alliance between the two airlines. In 1990, KLM carried 16,000,000 passengers. KLM president Jan de Soet retired at the end of 1990 and was succeeded in 1991 by Pieter Bouw.[13] In March 1994, KLM and Northwest Airlines introduced World Business Class on intercontinental routes and introduced its Boeing 767-300ER in July 1995. In 1997 Pieter Bouw resgined as president of KLM, he was succeeded by Leo van Wijk.[14]

The 2000s
In March and June 2002, KLM announced it would renew its intercontinental fleets by replacing the Boeing 767s, Boeing 747–300s and eventually the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 with Boeing 777-200ERs and Airbus A330-200s. Some 747s will be first to retire. The MD-11s will remain in service until 2014. The first Boeing 777 was received on 25 October 2003, entering commercial service on the Amsterdam–Toronto route, while the first Airbus A330-200 was introduced on 25 August 2005 and entered commercial service on the Amsterdam–Washington Dulles route.

KerimCan did it!
Air France-KLM
On 30 September 2003, Air France and KLM announced and agreed to a merger plan in which Air France and KLM would become subsidaries of a holding company called Air France-KLM. Both airlines would retain their own brands and both Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol would become the key hubs.[15] In February 2004, the European Commission and US Department of Justice approved the proposed merger of Air France and KLM. In April 2004 an exchange offer took place in which KLM shareholders exchanged their KLM shares for Air France shares. Furthermore, the merger of Air France and KLM got approved by the shareholders in April 2004. By exchanging the KLM shares for Air France shares, the merger will be fullfilled. A
t 4 May 2004, the exchange offer was called successful,[20]As of 5 May 2004, the merger of Air France and KLM was a done deal.[21] As of 5 May 2004, Air France - KLM is listed at the Euronext exchanges in Paris, Amsterdam and New York. In September 2004 the merger is completed by creation of the Air France-KLM holding company. The merger of Air France and KLM resulted in the world's largest airline group by turnover. The merger should lead to an annual total cost-saving of between 400 and 500 milion euros.
It did not appear that KLM's longstanding joint venture with Northwest Airlines (since merged with Delta Air Lines), would be affected by the merging with Air France. Both KLM and Northwest joined the SkyTeam alliance in September 2004.
In March 2007 KLM started using the Amadeus reservation system, along with partner Kenya Airways. Furthermore, after 10 years, Leo van Wijk resigned from his position as president of KLM. He is succeeded by Peter Hartman.
